Full of excitement and mystery with a twist of laughter.
This book was very exciting and hard to put down once you began reading. It had me starving of curiosity from the mystery and events that took place throughout each chapter. The book includes details describing the scenes and emotions of the characters which made me feel like I was part of the events that were taking place. This book is full of excitement, mystery and laughter. Good job Stu!!!!!!!!!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this bike race mystery.
Daytona Dirt is a refreshing edge-of-the-seat murder mystery set in a world not very well known to most readers--the off-track dirt bike Enduro racing scene. This novel has a unique Florida setting. Every time I thought I had the mystery figured out there would be a new twist in the plot. It has engaging characters, romance, and action adventure. I simply could not put it down until I finished it.

Chihuly: Form from Fire

WOW!
Absolutely amazing!
Chihuly is incredible.
Not much in the way of descriptions, just a brief introduction to each series (Macchia's, Persians, etc.), which I found just enough. What I'm interested in are the actual pieces, and there are plenty of exceptional pictures.
Again, amazing. Truly inspiriational for the novice glass blower and an absolute delight for everyone else!

Speedweeks: Ten Days at Daytona
Published in Hardcover by (July, 2000)

A good good photo book about one week at Daytona's Speedway
NASCAR has become the greatest spectator sport in America. The top ten most-attended sports events in 2000 were all NASCAR races, and of these races the 500 mile race at Daytona International Speedway is the crown jewel. For 10 days the town eats, sleeps, and breathes NASCAR motor racing. This book captures in pictures the start of the NASCAR season, including the IROC Firebird races, the Craftsman Truck series, the Busch series, and the main event - the Daytona 500 Winston Cup race. Its an excellent photojournal of modern-era racing from the perspective of the crews, the drivers, the fans, and just about everyone else, but like most photojournals there isn't much information about the history of the sport or any other useful reference information. Still, the people who buy this book probably already know the history of NASCAR racing anyway.

One of the GREATEST NASCAR books
The pictures and storys in this book are some of the best. If you love NASCAR you will love this book. It travels with some on the biggest names in NASCAR over the 2000 Daytona Speedweeks.

The Snake and the Spider: A Real Life Case of Abduction and Murder in Daytona Beach
Published in Paperback by Dell Pub Co (November, 1995)
Author: Karen Kingsbury
Average review score:

The Snake and The Spider
I just read Ms. Kinksbury's book and there where things in it that didn't ring true because she didn't dig deep enough. She never disclosed the real name of Spider or that he was 18 years old, not 22 when the murders took place. He told the truth about what happened and nearly paid for it with his life, while his partner was made to look like a hero. Anyone who thinks he didn't cry over what happened to those two boys and himself doesn't know what their talking about. He's not the animal they have labelled him to be. Just a very messed up kid who didn't care anymore......

The Snake and the Spider
I thought this book was really good. I had never heard about the murders until I found this book in the library. I think this book touched me because of all the emotions it brought out. When Spider confused I was truely amazed because the details were so real. It was like I was living the story myself.

Suspenseful
This is a harrowing book. The naivete and innocence of Daryl and Jim is in sharp contrast to the violence and viciousness of the two predators. This story makes a powerful case for parents to warn their children to be careful of people they know nothing about and children not to be too trusting of people they meet. Kingsbury skillfully balances the suspense of the investigation with the desperation, grief, and anguish of the parents. Perfectly paced, this book masterfully demonstrates the frightening fact that there are many snakes and spiders in this world - and they don't always live in the wilderness.

Speed Week
Published in Hardcover by Putnam Pub Group (May, 1999)
Author: S. V. Date
Average review score:

Walks like a comedy, but...
In The Art of Fiction, John Gardner says that a novelist who doesn't care about his characters suffers from "frigidity." Date suffers from ice.

The characters are 2-dimensional cartoons, used by Date to reach his predictable conclusion. The JR and stepmother plotline is trite, predictable, as well as the Nolan and Barbie plotline. Date always telegraphs what's going to happen next, leaving no suspense. The only mildly interesting character is Romer, but Date make him act out of character and illogically.

This was also the problem with Date's later novel, Smokeout, although I didn't quite see it then. Date doesn't let his characters free to be themselves. He doesn't respect them. He puts them in straitjackets. Frankly, if this guy weren't a journalist with personal contacts, no one would publish him, and I don't care what nice things Hiaasen says on the book jackets. You want to read REAL comedy in the tradition of Hiaasen, read TIM DORSEY! His stuff is REALLY funny!

Out of print? WHY?
Think I like his kooky characters even moreso than Hiassens if that's possible. Like going on a ride at Cedar Point and a ride at the Fair. They're similar, but not quite :-)

Too, too funny
I foolishly paid attention to a reviewer below and avoided this book for more than a year, despite having enjoyed Smokeout. So then I read Deep Water and loved it. And then Black Sunshine and loved it. So finally I bought and read Speed Week. And you know what? Hiaasen was right! This book is absolutely, flat-out hilarious! Murder-for-hire in Daytona Beach, with some of the dumbest criminals in the world. As somebody who spent more than one Spring Break down there when I was in college, I can testify that Mr. Date didn't have to make much of this up. Highly recommended.

Problems
First, if your buying this book thinking it was published in September of 2000 (as they list it) don't buy it! I emailed the help department at Amazon.com and they told me it was published in September of 2000 and it was not! Amazon.com, update and recheck you publication information before you post it--the date was the only reason I purchased the book, which was terrible if you must know.

WHAT ABOUT THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE SCENES??
I WAS APART OF THIS WHOLE SITUATION A LONG TIME AGO. SOME PEOPLE WERE LEFT OUT OF THE MIX LIKE MAINTENANCE MAN BILL "VASILIOS" MARKANTONAKIS. I WONDER WHAT HAPPEND TO SUCH CHARACTERS. I REALLLY FEEL LISA WAS SWEPT OFF HER FEET. SHE COULD HAVE GIVEN THANKS TO THE PEOPLE THAT TOLD HER THE TRUTH. INSTEAD SHE GOES ON TO TALK SHOEWS AND DISCUSSES HOW IT WAS HER OWN PERSONAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT THAT SAVED HER. iDF IT WASNT FOR TWO SPECIFIC INDIVIDUALS MAKING A PHONE CALL WHO KNOWS WHAT REALLY MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED. BUT THESE MINOR DETAILS ARE IGNORED.

Knowing one of the victims
Knowing Kevin(Mark) Ramsey made reading this book very difficult. I thought it was a great book even if I did through it across the room a few times. I like true crime books and this is one of the best I've read.

Hidden Walt Disney World , Orlando and Beyond 2 Ed: Including Epcot, Universal Studios, Sea World, Tampa, Daytona Beach and Cape Canaveral
Published in Paperback by Ulysses Press (09 November, 2001)
Authors: Lisa Oppenheimer, Catherine O'Neal, and Stacy Ritz
Average review score:

A misleading title leads to a disappointing travel book
I bought this book on the premise of showing me some of the little known facts of Walt Disney World. For example: The secrets about the names on the windows of mainstreet; the mysterious hoof prints leading to the Haunted Mansion; or hidden details that I know nothing about.

Unfortunately, after going on our trip, I found it was a water-down version of the far-superior Birnbaum's Guide to Disney World.

My suggestion? Stick with Mr. Birnbaum...I know I will.

Great for information on the rest of Orlando
This book was very helpful during our recent trip. I packed it in the backpack to carry in the theme park. I found it highly superior to the Birnbaum book on Disney because this one will tell which rides are worth missing and which are must see's. The Birnbaum book, being the "official" Disney book is just a little too rosy about everything. Hidden Orlando gives the real scoop. I loved the section on Sea World too.
